History
New Leaf Yoga Foundation was created by like-minded people who want to share what we have learned through yoga.
With a shared vision to make yoga more accessible in our communities, we set out to build an organization that would not only bring yoga to various groups of people, but would also provide support for teachers and facilities so that long-term, committed programs could be implemented and maintained.
Our original intention to bring programs to anyone who did not have easy access to yoga classes began to shift to a specific focus on youth after we started our pilot project at a youth detention facility.
We were overwhelmed with the huge potential in helping youth and to ignite social change in the very people who embody hope for the future.
Philosophy
We believe that yoga (and by yoga we mean asanas – physical poses – and seated meditation) can be a powerful contributor to social change.
We consider yoga a form of personal activism. Through this practice, we have learned to love ourselves a little more, and we strive to carry that compassion out into our lives.
The violence, fear and suffering that we experience in our world begins in the hearts of individuals, and change on a larger scale starts one person at a time.
At New Leaf Yoga Foundation, we hope to inspire at-risk and incarcerated youth to turn over a new leaf in life, to find the strength within themselves to lessen their own suffering and to contribute to a more peaceful world.

Apart from teaching yoga, Elisa works in educational television for children where she has worked as an on-air host, a writer and as a researcher.

Contributors
Moksha Yoga
The Moksha Yoga community is a progressive group of yoga studios that has played a vital role in the founding of New Leaf Yoga Foundation.
Moksha studios across Canada came together to provide the seed funding needed to get New Leaf off the ground, and studios continue to donate a portion of the proceeds of their Karma classes (by-donation classes) each month.
We hope that the generosity of the Moksha community will inspire other yoga studios to become involved!
If your yoga studio would like to get involved, please click here.
Lululemon
Lululemon Athletica is North America’s largest yoga clothing retailer.
In late 2007, New Leaf Yoga Foundation was chosen to be one of the recipients of Lululemon’s
Charitable Giving Program in the Greater Toronto Area.
Through this program, we received a significant donation that will go far in helping us to implement new programs in 2008.
